Volksawagen finally decided to put some effort into their performance sedan. The last generation GLI was supposed to be a GTI with a trunk, but it was far from that. The MK6 GLI was a great car, but it was not even comparable to the performance the GTI has. Now that the New gen GLI is on the MQB platform they were able to put the excitement back into the car.
The new Jetta GLI has the same 2.0-liter turborcharged inline four cylindar as the GTI. Putting out the same 228 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque. Thats an increase of 18 horsepower and 41 lb-ft. The specs on this car get even better with the option of a 6 speed manual or a seven speed dual clutch transmission. Yes, that’s right a manual transmission. VW is keeping the manual alive a little longer. They also added a limited slip differential as standard and adaptive dampers as an option.
The GLI is definitely a game changer for VW. The optional features like the digital cockpit will make people choose this over the GTI. Not everyone will find these features more enticing than a GTI, but it will definitely draw more buyers to their popular sedan. I’m very excited to get behind the wheel of this car. The new Jetta GLI is due to release in the spring.
